We don’t have to follow a specific formula to talk with God, but practicing different ways to pray can help us find deeper purpose and connection to Him. Throughout history, one way that Christians have enriched a season of prayer is by entering a season of fasting. Fasting is not about God getting closer to you, because He is already near to you. Rather, fasting is designed to help you move closer to Him.
Since prayer and fasting may be new practices for you, we would like to walk you through them. It can be intimidating if you have never fasted before, but it doesn’t have to be. Fasting is simply denying yourself something you enjoy (a meal(s) or social media for example), and using the extra time you are left with to focus on God through prayer.

In the gospels, we see Jesus praying at various times of day, so there is not a right or wrong time to pray. Jesus often got up early in the morning to spend time with His Heavenly Father. Make a daily appointment with God — whether it’s first thing in the morning, at lunch, or in the evening — and faithfully keep it.
The way you pray from day to day may vary. You may consider including worship music in your time of prayer. You may light a candle or two. Or you may consider spending five minutes in silence asking God to speak to you after you pray to Him. Just know that your prayer time doesn’t always have to look the same; there is freedom for variety.

Over the next 14 days, we will be using 2 Chronicles 7:14-16 as our prayer guide. Each day we will look at a small section of these powerful words. Even though these words were written a very long time ago, God remains the same. Consider the implications of the word “if” that begins these verses. For the next two weeks, open your heart to what God may want to say to you specifically and all that he wants to do in this world.

DAY 1 - July 18, 2020

“If my people"

Are you God’s people? Absolutely you are! You were created for such a time as this. You are God’s people, you belong, you matter, and you are necessary.        
Today let’s remember we are God’s people. May you rest in the fact you belong, you matter, and take time to thank God for being part of His amazing family!

In Him we have redemption, through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.

DAY 2 - July 19, 2020

“Who are called by my name”

Sometimes we feel inadequate, and not strong enough, but being called by His name, the name that is above every other name, means we are His. And that name is Jesus! You are His. You are redeemed. Saved. Restored. You do not have to muster up the strength to make it, He gives you strength.
Today remember that you are called, and by whose name you are called. He has equipped you, and given you all you need to be an overcomer. He will help you, and you can put your trust in Him.

I trust in Your unfailing love. I will rejoice because You have rescued me. I will sing to the Lord because He has been so good to me.

DAY 3 - July 20, 2020

“Will humble themselves & pray”

Prayer is so very important. It is a posture and attitude of surrender. Yes we know that God knows all things, and will answer according to His will. What prayer does is remind us who is in control. Sometimes in this world we have so many obligations going on, so many things we are trying to juggle, that we risk becoming prideful.

When we are humble and acknowledge who gave us the strength to do those things in the first place, that allows are hearts to surrender and remember who is in control. Then we are in a place of humbleness to center on Jesus, and praise him for who He is. Ask God to reveal the areas in your life where you are pursuing personal praise and glory, rather than giving him the praise and glory.

Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

DAY 4 - July 21, 2020

“And seek my face”

Prayer is about relationship, not just another thing a follower of Jesus does. When you realize how loved you are by the Creator of the universe, you begin to long for and seek after what He is saying to you. Seeking his face means putting your whole attention—heart, mind, body and soul into the singular goal of knowing him more. As we put Jesus first in all we do, everything else will come into alignment.

As you take some time to seek His face today, do all that you can to put distraction aside. Be patient, be ok with the silence, and if things come to your mind, it helps to write them down. That way you can come back to them later. This can help minimize them from distracting you so that you can focus on Jesus.  

You will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.

DAY 5 - July 22, 2020

“And turn from their wicked ways”

Just like when you are teaching a child the danger of something hot verses something cold, your motivation is to keep them from the pain of a burn. You may instruct them to stay away from the stove, because it is hot and can burn their fingers. God also desires us to turn away from things that are not from him and cause pain to our hearts.

You know that thing you struggle with…the area in your life that you continually fail in? He is wanting you to turn away from that and ask for help. We need His help to pre-decide what to do when trials and temptations come into our lives. It works better if you and Jesus do this together. Ask for His help through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and write down the ideas that come to your mind.

My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him.

DAY 6 - July 23, 2020

“Then I will hear from heaven”

God promises to hear us. He also promised to never leave us or turn his back on us. We too need to be willing to listen to what He is saying. It is not always comfortable to listen and obey, but it’s necessary for us if we desire to grow and become more like Him.

What a blessing it is to know that our growth is continual, and as we petition heaven, we are heard. What a joy, and confidence we can have that God hears our prayers. Thank Him today for hearing you. Find great joy and delight that the God of the universe desires to be in relationship with you!

Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

DAY 7 - July 24, 2020

“I will forgive their sin”

If you are like most of us, you have times when you are sure God won’t forgive you for the one thing, or the many things, you have done. The good news is, He will! Just as this scripture makes clear, God says He will forgive our sin. Don’t stay in a place of condemnationit is God’s kindness that leads us to repentance.

You do not have to fear that God will stop loving you. He is with you. He will forgive you. He will restore and strengthen you. Take a few minutes and ask God for forgiveness over those areas of your life that you have felt too ashamed or too unworthy of being forgiven for. Then thank him for the victory over each area. He loves you and will heal and strengthen you.

The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

DAY 8 - July 25, 2020

“And I will heal their land”

Our land needs healing, and God promises to heal it. As followers of Jesus, we can have confidence that when we come to Jesus and pray for healing in our land, He will do it! God does not lie, and if He promises, He will always keep His promises.

Take some time today to pray for our land. Ask Jesus to please heal our country, our nation, and our world. Pray and ask for healing, restoration and revival. Take some time to thank Jesus that He is healing our land.

The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you or forsake you.

DAY 9 - July 26, 2020

“Now my eyes will be open”

Have you ever played hide and seek, and you are the one who is “it”? You cover your eyes and count, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ready or not, here I come! You open your eyes and process all you heard while your eyes were closed. As you search you hear giggles in the closet, under the blanket, and when you find the culprit there is laughter and joy.

God’s eyes are open to you, you do not have to hide. Fellowshipping with Him, will bring you so much joy! Invite Him into your worship today. Enjoy His presence.

God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey Him, and the power to do what pleases Him.

DAY 10 - July 27, 2020

“And my ears attentive”

Have you ever had a conversation with someone, and at some point you say, “are you listening to me?” It can be frustrating to say the least. We have such an amazing promise from God with these words “and my ears attentive”. Not only is He listening, but He is attentive to us. He is fully dialed in, and cares about what we are going through.

As you seek Him today, know that he is fully attentive to your prayers. Rest in the fact that He hears you. Lift your heart cries to him, and trust that He is listening.

I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.

DAY 11 - July 28, 2020

“To the prayer offered in this place”

What is “your” place. Is it a comfy chair, a prayer closet, your car? Some of us have a specific place we like to pray. Whether that’s you or not, you can talk to God at any place, because He is everywhere.

God has so many things to tell you, and He longs to fellowship with you. If you have an attitude of expectation of meeting with a favorite friend, you will come away from prayer smiling and encouraged. Ask God today what is it He wants you to know about what you have been praying for.

If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask Him, and He will gladly tell you.

DAY 12 - July 29, 2020

“I have chosen and consecrated this temple”

Remember teams in school, where there were two captains, and they would call names for their team? The anxiety you would feel, as your heart raced, and you thought to yourself, please don’t let me be the last called. The peer pressure if you were the captain to pick the “best” for your team, and your sweating palms as you thought, am I good enough? Well, being a child of God is not like that! You are CHOSEN, and always picked first! You don’t have to wait and see. You don’t have to live in anxiety about being good enough. He wants you just the way you are!

Isn’t it so relieving to know this life is not about being good enough, talented enough, but it is about being loved enough by God! He chose you, He consecrated you, cleaned you, made you whole and perfect in Him through the blood of Jesus. Take some time today to thank Him for making you, you.

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

DAY 13 - July 30, 2020

“So that my name will be there forever”

God’s name is the name above all names! It says His name will be there forever, what an awesome promise. We are His, and He chose us, and guess what that means, we will be His forever. So many people leave legacies in life, and we are grateful for those who took stands, and we admire and remember them.

Let us not forget what is done for Christ is what truly matters. The legacy we should all strive for is to truly be Jesus with skin on. Doing this, means we are the ones that love deeply, forgive quickly, and point people to the Father. Today ask God how you can truly be a blessing to others, so that you are a reflection of whose name you represent.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

DAY 14 - July 31, 2020

“My eyes and my heart will always be there”

Instead of being fearful that God is always watching us, turn your thoughts to the fact that He is always watching as your protector, and He is covering you. There is absolutely nothing you can do to make God stop loving you. That’s right, nothing!

It doesn’t matter what you have done, or where you have been. He loves you, and His heart is with you. Remember it is kindness that leads us to repentance, and you can rest in knowing God’s got your back. Today pray for healing in impossible situations, and watch what God will do.

Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you.
